Mr Steve Cannon MBE FRCS, Chair

Steve was appointed as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in 1988, President of the British Orthopaedic Association 2007-2008 and is an elected member of the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons (2008).

Clinical specialisation is orthopaedic oncology and he has developed orthopaedic surgical techniques to deal with sarcomas of bone and soft tissue. Mr Cannon has a particular interest in fixation of endoprostheses to bone, non invasive growing prosthesis and pelvic surgery.


SCT_team_Tim_Briggs

Professor Tim Briggs CBE, FRCS, Trustee

Was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the RNOH in 1992 and has been Medical Director since 1997. He is currently President of the British Orthopaedic Oncology Society and due to start as a Member of Council for the British Orthopaedic Association in January 2010.

His clinical specialisation is the management of bone and soft tissue sarcomas and methods to reduce their local recurrence. He has helped develop orthopaedic implants to improve function in this group of patients and reduce their stay in hospital with implants such as the "bionic bone". He is a clinical leader in the field of autologous chondrocyte implantation in which he lectures nationally and internationally and has a major research interest in this. He also has an interest in chromosomal aberrations in metal-on-metal implantation and bearing surfaces and is about to commence a study of photodynamic therapy and its use to reduce local recurrence in soft tissue sarcomas. He is one of the surgeons for the Arsenal football clubs.


SCT_team_Rob_Pollock

Mr Rob Pollock FRCS, Trustee

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon within the London Sarcoma Service. Based at RNOH with special interest in surgery for bone and soft tissue tumours and complex limb reconstruction.

A member of the European Musclo-Skeletal Oncology Society and the International Society of Limb Salvage. He is representative for sarcomas for the National Cancer Research Network. In 2008 he was awarded the ABC fellowship by the British Orthopaedic Association and spent 6 weeks visiting centres of excellence in the USA and Canada.


SCT_team_Will_Aston

Mr Will Aston BSc FRCSEd (Tr&Orth), Trustee

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the RNOH and part of the London Sarcoma Service. Special interests include the surgical treatment of bone and soft tissue tumours and complex joint replacement.

Research interests include the design and fixation of massive prostheses in limb salvage surgery and the use of these techniques in revision joint replacement surgery. Aiming to improve functional outcomes by using joint sparing techniques coupled with biological reconstruction where possible. A member of the British Orthopaedic Oncology Society and he is involved with the teaching and training of orthopaedic trainees.


SCT_team_John_Skinner

Mr John Skinner FRCS, Trustee

Was appointed Senior Lecturer in Orthopaedics at the Institute of Orthopaedics, University College London before taking his present appointment as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the RNOH.

Clinical specialisation in bone and soft tissue tumours and complex joint reconstruction. Research interests include implant design and fixation and limb conserving surgery for malignant disease. Also has a special interest in bearing surfaces for joint replacements, particularly the effect of metal on metal bearings on biological systems.


SCT_team_Panos_Gikas

Mr Panagiotis Gikas - Consultant Orthopaedic and Sarcoma Surgeon

Mr Gikas has completed his medical school and postgraduate training in London and specialises in primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty, knee cartilage injuries and the surgical management of primary and metastatic bone cancer.

Mr Gikas’s clinical and research endeavours have centred around hip and knee reconstruction and treatment of bone and soft tissue cancer. His interests include the use of the anterior approach to hip replacement, custom made instruments as well as robotics for knee replacement, use of stem cell and cartilage techniques to address cartilage defects and the management of major bone and soft tissue cancer.

Julie Woodford

Macmillan Nurse Consultant and Sarcoma Lead Clinician

Julie joined the RNOH Sarcoma Unit in 2000 and has loved every minute of it. The team has expanded significantly over the years and it is important to Julie as a Consultant Nurse and the Clinical Lead that she continues to have hands on patient experience - this is the most rewarding part of her role.


SCT_team_Adrienne_Flanagan

Professor Adrienne M Flanagan OBE, MB PhD FRCPath FMSci, Trustee

Head of the Academic Department of Pathology at the UCL Cancer Institute where she is the lead molecular, and sarcoma clinical scientist.

Adrienne is the clinical lead for the London Sarcoma Service – the largest in the UK - and honorary consultant histopathologist at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, and at Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford. Her research programme focuses on identifying the genetic epigenetic and alterations involved in the development and progression of bone and soft tissue tumours. Adrienne translates her findings into clinical practice, and uses them for providing more accurate diagnoses and for stratifying patients for therapeutic targeted treatment. For translational research to be successful, her research relies heavily on access to patients’ samples as a consequence she has endeavoured to develop safe and efficient biobanking processes. She has published more than 170 peer-reviewed pathology and scientific papers. Adrienne is the Meeting Secretary of Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland, and a trustee or member of various committees including the Sarcoma UK Research Advisory Committee, The Jean Shanks Foundation, The Chordoma Foundation (USA).

Andrew Roast

Andy first heard of Skeletal Cancer Trust after being treated for chondrosarcoma. He received limb salvage surgery on his left hip and thigh bone in 2014. In 2016, he rode his bike from London to Paris to raise funds for SCT.

Andy brings his digital communications and patient experience to SCT.

Adrian Waddingham CBE, Trustee

Adrian retired in 2018 after a 47-year career as a consulting actuary. Adrian was awarded a CBE in the Birthday Honours of 2012 for services to pensions. He was also awarded the prestigious Finlaison Medal of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries in 2016 for services to the actuarial profession.

Adrian worked as a consulting actuary in Malaysia for the same firm from 1981 to 1985, during which time he served as the President of the Actuarial Society of Malaysia. In 1989, he was a founding partner of Barnett Waddingham LLP which has now become the largest firm of independent consulting actuaries in the UK with over 1,300 employees. During this period he served as Chairman of the Association of Pensioneer Trustees; Chairman of the Association of Consulting Actuaries; and Chairman of the International Association of Consulting Actuaries.

Elected as a Sheriff in the City of London in 2013, Adrian and his wife Angela lived in the Old Bailey for a year and worked closely with the Lord Mayor of London in promoting the City of London and UK. Adrian is also a Liveryman Haberdasher. Adrian has just stepped down as Vice-Chairman of the Epilepsy Society and is a director of the City Music Foundation. Adrian is a trustee of two UK pension funds and an Honorary Fellow of his alma mater Royal Holloway College, University of London.


SCT_team_Paul_Unwin

Dr Paul Unwin Trustee

Dr Unwin is the Managing Director of Stanmore Implants, a company that focuses on the design and fabrication of specialised implants for limb salvaging.

He is a Board member of the International Society on Limb Salvage. Dr Unwin has been actively involved in limb salvage research since 1989, and his PhD thesis was on the development of enhanced fixation methods of limb salvage implants. Currently Dr Unwin is actively involved in the development of the next generation massive endoprosthetic replacements and implants for the direct skeletal attachment of artificial limbs.


SCT_team_Jackie_Burn

Jackie Burn, Hon Secretary

Jackie Burn first came to work for the RNOH aged 16 in 1968. She remained in contact with ex-colleagues and in 1997 was approached by Mr Hugh Kemp, ex-Chairman of Scat to assist as SCT Secretary on a voluntary basis.

Initially Jackie was responsible for corresponding with all donors as well as being the SCT banker. After a permanent fundraiser was appointed Jackie was able to relinquish some responsibilities, but remains the banker, events helper etc. Jackie worked in the NHS from 1968 until 2005 as an administrator, nurse, practice manager and lastly Mental Health Act Administrator. She has recently become a voluntary Anthony Nolan Trust Courier.

Gerard Kieran FCA

Gerard became Treasurer in 2013 shortly after retiring from his job as Finance Director of a family company. He took over from Adrian Waddingham who was about to spend a year as Sheriff of the City of London.

His working life was mainly involved in commerce and industry, but one year was spent in the charitable sector, working for the Red Cross in Geneva dealing with accounts for relief operations in Eastern Africa.

Sarah Wright, Head of Fundraising

Sarah has several years’ experience in the charity sector having worked for the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Alliance. She has seen first-hand how supportive SCT is and has fundraised for SCT through the Ellis Harriet Clark Foundation organising the ‘EHC Ball’ in 2009 and the very successful ‘Ellis 50 miler’ bike rides. 

Sarah is really looking forward to working with those that are already supporters of SCT and others that perhaps haven’t heard about our good work yet. It would not be possible to fulfill all of Scat’s financial commitments without the amazing support from others.
