The SCT Hour is a sixty minute show on all things related to Sarcoma at the RNOH, hosted by Sarah Wright, Head of Fundraising at the Skeletal Cancer Trust.

Including interviews with fundraisers and supporters, as well as physiotherapists and surgeons who work at the RNOH. We will also feature highlights from some of our fundraising events.

 

Tips for Amputees: Scarlett

In this first spotlight edition of Tips for Amputees we talk to eleven-year-old Scarlett who had a through-hip amputation in early 2021. Scarlett gives us an insight into preparing for life as an amputee and how important it is to remain positive. “If it doesn’t go to plan” she says “I find another way around.” We also hear about her hobbies, her inspiration and plans for the future in this first episode of Tips for Amputees.


Episode 6: Rob Pollock

Mr Rob Pollock is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a Special Interest in Sarcoma. In this episode of the SCT Hour, Mr Pollock opens up about life as a surgeon, what inspires him, and why he pushes himself to extreme lengths to raise funds “the pain of training and the pain of undertaking an event is nothing compared to what a cancer patient goes through.” He also gives an insight into the research that SCT funds.


Episode 5: Jo Buonaguidi

In this episode, Sarah Wright speaks to Jo Buonaguidi, who was treated for a bone tumour in 1985. In this interview she talks about her journey through diagnosis, surgery and rehabilitation and how that experience influenced her passion for art. Jo has been a great supporter of SCT and has produced our Christmas Cards which are available for sale through the SCT website.


Episode 4: Tina Thomas and Julie Taylor

In this episode Sarah Wright is joined by Tina Thomas and her sister Julie. Tina’s son was diagnosed at a very young age with osteosarcoma and he tragically passed away at the age of eight . This year Adam would have been 30 and Tina and her family embarked upon a full year of fundraising activities including a Halloween party, a walk, a cycle, a half marathon – Tina and her family are so inspiring and it is great to hear about what motivates her to continue.


Episode 3: James Wilson

In this interview with James Wilson we get a full and open account of what it was like to receive a cancer diagnosis at the age of 17. James talks about his operation, his recovery, returning to school and life now. It was such a pleasure to spend time with James and we are looking forward to him being much more involved in SCT going forward.


Episode 2: Abby McCarthy and Hannah Hughes

We have a fantastic rehabilitation team here at the RNOH, part of SCT’s focus going forward is about survivorship and how we can help people to get back to a full life. In episode two, Sarah sits down with Hannah Hughes and Abby McCarthy - physiotherapists whose invaluable work helps people become mobile again.


Episode 1: Billie Clark Shorten

For the first episode of The SCT Hour, Sarah chats to Billie Clark Shorten about how she has fundraised hundreds of thousands of pounds in memory of her sister Ellis. Billie talks about how and why she supports SCT plus how doing so has brought much comfort to her family.
